The Respect Effect app is a new way to reclaim the positive energy of the digital spaces inhabited by teens. Futures Without Violence were looking for a new way to help young people develop more positive friendships through social media. Through my direction, I conducted workshops with students, designed and developed the Respect Effect app for iOS and Android devices.

Co-designing the app with teens
To better understand the needs, attitudes, and behaviors of teen users, I held a series of design workshops with a total of 87 students in high schools throughout San Francisco. It was clear through talking with teens that if this was going to be a digital tool for young people, it had to be mobile, social and gamified. I worked with the students to sketch out ideas for what functionality the app should have.
Ripples of respect
I came up with a name and logo mark to convey the ripple effect of social media activity and how respectful behavior can have a positive influence beyond a user's immediate network.
Respect Effect won five awards - three W3 Awards and two Davey Awards for the Respect Effect, a mobile app to promote healthy relationships among teens.
Outcomes
The Respect Effect app helps teens build and maintain positive, respectful friendships through social media.
Workshops provided young people with tools and knowledge to navigate digital spaces with empathy and kindness.
The app was successfully designed and developed for both iOS and Android devices, ensuring wide accessibility.
The project fostered a supportive digital environment, reducing negative interactions and encouraging healthier online communities for teens.
Futures Without Violence gained an effective tool to promote long-term positive behavior among teens in digital spaces.
